Among the OVTXs so far detected by high-resolution liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HR- LC-MS), ovatoxin-a (OVTX-a) has emerged as the major toxin produced by O. ovata.[3] It was successfully isolated from O. ovata cultures and structurally identified as a paly- toxin analogue by means of NMR techniques.

The unidentified deoxy-positions can be assigned both between C16 and C20 and between C53 and C73. Toxin profiles of Ostreopsis collected in the middle to southern coastal area in Japan were similar irrespective of clades classified by the phylogenetic analysis reported in our previous study. Currently, the benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata represents a serious concern to human health in the whole Mediterranean basin due to the production of palytoxin congeners, a putative palytoxin and ovatoxins (ovatoxin-a, -b, -c, -d/-e), listed among the most potent marine toxins.
